Emma's Story

Posted in Experiences of My Mentor, Learners' Stories

I was being bullied by five girls in the same village. They would call me names and push me about when they saw me. I was scared to leave the house because I didn’t want to bump into them.

My confidence plummeted, as I stopped going out and having fun. Eventually, this meant that I also stopped going to school, and as a result I became NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training).

I was contacted by Zera Bacon, a Personal Adviser at TCHC, who told me that I was eligible to join the Youth Contract, a free advisory and mentoring service. Whereas before life seemed hopeless, now I was aware of my options and it was great to have someone to talk to!

Zera would take me on walks that got longer and longer to help build my confidence. Eventually I felt that I was able to leave my home without feeling threatened by the bullies that lived nearby. I started to feel much happier and more motivated to repair my life.

I started talking to Zera about my future and she helped me set realistic goals and a plan for achieving these goals. She made me realise that anything is possible.

I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in hair and beauty, so I enrolled in a Level 1 hair and beauty course, thanks to the confidence which Zera has given me. I later left college when I was given my first full-time job. I have never been happier!

TCHC’s Youth Contract has done wonders for my confidence and self-esteem. I can now leave the house and I am no longer afraid of the bullies who before were doing me down. I am extremely grateful for all Zera has done for me!

I hope that other young people like me may benefit from the project in the future.
