Samantha's Story

Posted in Experiences of My Mentor, Learners' Stories

Hi, I’m Samantha and I am NEET. This means that I am Not in Employment, Education or Training. I had previously been living with my mother but unfortunately we never had the best relationship. When it soured, I couldn’t take it any more so I decided to leave and move in with my partner’s parents.

By this point, I had left school and was looking for a job but I found them hard to come by, particularly as I was lacking skills and qualifications. I spent my days sitting around doing nothing, which made me very bored and unhappy.

I had reached a low point in my life when I was contacted by Natalie Arculli about the Youth Contract, which supports 16 and 17 year olds like me who live in the East of England through mentoring and advice, helping them find work, get an apprenticeship place or back into education.

Natalie had a way of making me feel relaxed and at ease. When she helped me secure an interview for a hairdressing apprenticeship, I was scared because I had to go on the train to get to the interview and this was something I had never done before.

However, I need not have worried as it was not actually as scary as I thought. Natalie was there with me every step of the way, waiting for me while I had my interview to ensure I got on the right train back.

The support which Natalie gave me really helped to boost my confidence and encouraged me to move forward with my life.

Natalie was there for me when I was asked to leave by my partner’s parents. She helped me through this, talking to the council for me so I could get into council housing.

I felt supported, for the first time in my life I felt like there was someone there for me. Natalie told me she would help and never failed to deliver on her promise.

Thanks to the project and the amazing support received from Natalie and the rest of TCHC, I was able to get a hairdressing apprenticeship!

This opportunity would not have been possible without the support Natalie has given me.
